The Referendum at Hayes - Red Meat Free Days

At the end of Spring term, KS1 and KS2 took part in a referendum which asked the question, ‘Should Hayes Primary have one meat-free day a week?’ The rationale behind this issue was that from an environmental position, some people believe that we should reduce our meat intake and many children at Hayes are keen to help the environment as much as they can. The opportunity displayed our school value of responsibility and gave the children a chance to learn more about democracy and exercise their right to vote!

On the day, the children voted at a ‘polling station’ which had been set up in the large hall. 59.9% voted ‘yes’ to the meat-free day which was 320 votes against the 40.1% who voted no with 215 votes.

Therefore, when we come back to school after the summer holidays, we will be taking part in red meat-free Mondays in order to reduce our meat consumption and support changes to help the environment.
